A Colorful Blow-Paint Lion Craft for Kids

What if, just this once, a lion's mane wasn't brown or golden… but completely multicolored?
Grab some straws and watercolors for a fun and wonderfully unpredictable art activity: a colorful blow-paint lion.
A few drops of liquid watercolor, one big breath, and the paint starts racing across the paper in every direction. The colors cross, overlap and blend, creating a completely unique lion's mane every single time.
It's a simple kids' art project that's perfect for experimenting with color while leaving plenty of room for creativity — and a little bit of chance!
Materials
Step-by-step:
Create the colorful mane
Using a dropper, place a few drops of liquid watercolor around the center of your watercolor paper.

Place a straw near the drops and blow to send the paint flying in different directions

Repeat with several other colors.

Watch what happens when the colors meet: some will overlap, while others will blend together and create entirely new shades.
Once your lion's mane looks wild and colorful enough, leave the painting to dry completely.
Creating the lion's Face
On another sheet of watercolor paper, draw and then cut out a circle to form the lion's face. Also draw two small rounded shapes, like half-circles, to create its ears.

Paint the face and ears with watercolors, then let them dry.

Using a black Posca marker, draw the eyes, snout, mouth, and all the little details that will give your lion its expression.

Cut out the ears and glue them behind the circle for the face.

All that's left to do is place and glue the head in the center of the blown-up painting.

And there you have it: the big splashes of color turn into an incredible multicolored mane!

Blow painting gives children a different way to experiment with art. They can watch the paint move with their breath, discover what happens when colors meet and blend, and create without being able to control every little detail.
It's also a fun way to practice breath control, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills through using the dropper, painting, cutting and gluing.
