In the pages of the lovely book “Le bonhomme et l’oiseau” (Éditions du Père Castor), the cold of winter is softened by the warmth of a beautiful friendship.

This story inspired us to work with the children to create a little bird that brings color and poetry.

Materials
cardboard
craft knife (with adult supervision)
black marker
water-soluble soft pastels
string
paper (10×20 cm)
hole punch
Step-by-step
Trace and cut out a bird shape.
Draw the shape of a bird on the cardboard, then carefully cut it out using a craft knife (or a pair of scissors, depending on the thickness).
Create the slot for the wings
Make a small incision in the center of the body, about 1.5 cm long and a few millimeters wide, so that you can insert the wings later.
Color the bird and draw the details.
Use watercolor pastels to bring it to life—soft winter or bright colors, depending on your inspiration. Add the eyes with a black marker.
Make the wings
Fold a strip of paper (10 × 20 cm) into an accordion shape. Slide it into the bird's slot: the wings take shape!
Hang the bird
Make a small hole in the neck, thread a string through it, and hang it up.

This simple and poetic activity allows children to:
develop their fine motor skills (cutting, folding, drawing);
reinforce reading through creativity - by reviewing their creation, children will remember the story being told
Let place to their imagination: each bird becomes unique and reflects the child who imagined it.
Bonus activity: snowman bookmark:
To continue immersing yourself in the magic of “The Man and the Bird,” here is a bonus activity that children loved!
