For Earth Day, we wanted to create a simple yet meaningful activity to do with the kids. A moment to slow down, get hands-on, create… and, above all, take the time to talk about our beautiful planet.

Observe its colors and shapes, and recreate them in a little craft to keep close by.

That’s how our worry stones were born. Small stones to hold and play with, perfect keeping little hands busy, controlling emotions, or replacing certain habits like nail-biting.

Why worry stones?

Worry stones are small objects meant to be kept in your pocket. You gently rub them with your thumb anytime you feel the need.

A simple, repetitive, and comforting action… that helps children refocus and calm down.

Materials

  • Polymer clay (Fimo Kids type; ref)

    • Blue

    • Green

    • White

    • Pink

    • Black

  • A oven

  • Water-based varnish (ref)

Step-by-step

  1. Form the base by rolling the blue dough into a ball.

  2. Create the continents by rolling small green balls, then flatten them slightly. Place them on the blue ball.

Add the poles by rolling two small white balls and placing them on opposite sides of the blue base ball.

  3. Carefully roll the ball between your hands to reshape it into a round ball.

  4. Shape the stone into its final form by placing the ball on a clean surface and gently flattening it with your thumb.

The center and bottom should be completely flat, while the top and sides remain slightly thicker.

  5. Create a cute, smiling face. Add eyes and a smile using black dough. Finish with two small pink cheeks for a soft, expressive touch

  6. Bake in the oven at 110°C for 30 minutes.

  7. Let it cool completely, then apply a water-based varnish for durability.

A small stone for better health and a thought for our planet.

These little worry stones encourage children to take care of themselves… while discussing how to take care of the world around us so that the Earth remains a nice and lovely place for life (represented by a smiling face on the Earth).
