Halloween is coming, and the little creatures of the night are starting to invade the house!

Today, I’m sharing an easy Halloween craft you can make with the kids: an adorable paper bat with big accordion-folded wings and a funny little head.

A few sheets of paper, a pair of scissors, some glue… and you’re all set!

It’s the perfect creative activity to get ready for Halloween while having fun cutting, folding, and putting it all together.

Materials
  • Black A4 paper

  • A few scraps of white and pink paper (or other colors)

  • Scissors

  • Pencil

  • Black felting-tip pen

  • Glue stick

  • Quick liquid glue

  • A piece of cotton string

Step-by-step

Step 1 – Prepare the bat

Draw a circle on a black paper, then cut it out.

Cut a strip of black paper for the accordion-folded wings.

From the scraps of black paper, cut out two small triangular ears, then two smaller triangles from pink paper, and a small oval for the nose.

Finally, from the white paper, cut out two eyes and two small, pointed teeth.

  • Matériel pour fabriquer une chauve-souris en papier : papier noir, ciseaux, colle, feutre et ficelle

Step 2 – Make a funny face

Glue all these pieces onto the circle to bring your bat to life.

Using a black felt-pen, add the pupils, nostrils, and a little smile.

If you want, you can also come up with other expressions: a sleeping bat, a surprised bat, or even a slightly scary one!

Step 3 – Make the accordion-style wings

Cut a long strip of black paper.

Fold it like an accordion, alternating the folds one way and then the other, until the strip is completely folded.

  • Bande de papier noir pliée en accordéon pour fabriquer les ailes d'une chauve-souris

Step 4 – Shape the wings and the suspension

Pull the strip of paper together in the middle to form the two wings.

Wrap a piece of string around the center and tie a knot to hold the folds together.

Tie another knot higher up with the remaining string so you can hang it.

Separate the two sides of the accordion to give the wings some volume.

Step 5 – Assemble your bat

Put a little glue in the center of the wings, then attach the bat's head.

Hold it in place for a few moments so the glue sets properly.

That's it! Your little bat is ready to take flight!

Why do we love this activity?

This craft activity helps children develop:

  • Fine motor skills, through cutting, folding, and gluing the small facial features.

  • Precision and coordination, by folding the paper into an accordion fold.

  • Creativity, by designing a funny, scary, or completely wacky bat!

A simple, inexpensive, and fun activity. In brief, a lovely activcity for a perfect and creative afternoon with the kids!
