How to bring a splash of color to the savannah? This activity is what exactly what you need!

DIY for kids - A Lion with the Mane of a Savannah King

For this creative activity, the lion gets a wonderfully colorful mane made from pipe cleaners in different colors.

It's a simple and playful craft that lets children explore colors and textures while creating a very own unique lion.

To make it even easier, you can download the free lion template, or simply draw your own lion directly onto cardboard.

Materials

  • Cardboard

  • Printable lion template and/or a pencil to draw your own:

  • Pipe cleaners in different colors (ref)

  • Scissors (ref)

  • Craft knife, to use carefully under adult supervision (ref)

  • Fast glue (ref)

  • Black felting pen (ref) or black POSCA (ref)

  • Clothespins (optional)

Step-by-step

  1. Print and trace the lion template onto cardboard, then carefully cut out the shape.

You can also draw your own lion if you prefer.

  2. Cut out a cardboard circle approximately the same size as the lion's head, without the ears. This will become the base for the mane.

Sometimes the cardboard is hard to cut, which is why I prefer to use a utility knife.

  1. Cut lots of pipe cleaners into different lengths, using as many colors as you like.

Glue them all around the cardboard circle, pointing them in different directions.

There's no need to make the mane perfectly even – the different lengths and directions are exactly what give this little lion its fun, wild look! !

  1. Once all the pipe cleaners are in place, turn the circle over and glue it behind the lion's head.

Pipe cleaners can make the two cardboard pieces a little tricky to hold together while the glue sets. We used clothespins to keep everything firmly in place for a few minutes (3 to 4 min are suffisent with fast glue).

  2. Glue a few shorter pieces of pipe cleaner to the end of the lion's tail to create a little colorful tuft.

  1. Optional: For extra dimension, cut out and glue a small additional piece of cardboard onto the face to create a raised muzzle.

  1. Use a black marker to add the eyes, nose, mouth and whiskers.

Outline the feet and draw the two front legs to give the lion a little more character.

Taaaada!

A lion with a multicolored mane which is fun and cute and above all, completely unique.

Why we love this craft?

Because this really lets children give free space to their creativity. They can:

  • choose their own color combinations

  • mix short and long pipe cleaners

  • create a neat mane (by following a color sequence) or, on the contrary, a completely messy one…

In short, no two lions are alike!

This activity also helps develop fine motor skills through gluing, drawing and cutting.
