Woven shell snails

My older one often asks me why we don't have a weaving loom. He made a mini carpet at school two years ago and has been thinking about it ever since.

To make him happy, I searched for an original autumn-themed weaving idea, and found that it will be a snail – well, several snails!

Materials

  • cardboard

  • pencil

  • scissors

  • round-tipped needle (ref)

  • white cotton thread (3 mm; ref)

  • various wool threads (ref)

  • posca markers (ref)

Step-by-step

  1. Draw and cut out a snail from cardboard.

  2. Using white cotton thread, stitch the centre of the shell and then create seven rays (always choose an odd number as alternating is more difficult with an even number).

  3. Attach the white thread at the back and start weaving with the wool of your choice (alternate colors for a multicolored effect).

  4. When the shell is finished, draw the eyes and mouth of your snail with felt-tip pens or markers.

Tips: A little advice if you're trying this for the first time: start with a small model, it's more gratifying for the child who will be able to finish it on their own!
